5 Style Mistakes Professional Women Over 40 Make (And How to Fix Them)

Style in your 40s should feel effortless, elevated and fully aligned with who you are today - not who you were 10 years ago. You've worked hard to get where you are, so now you're fully entitled to look and feel the part. But. Life is busy, your body may have changed and somewhere between your career and your family, your style may have lost its spark (and priority).
If you’ve found yourself in a bit of a wardrobe rut or feeling like your clothes no longer reflect the woman you’ve become, you're not alone. As a personal stylist working with professional women 40+, I often see this. I've done it myself - we forget to prioritise ourselves and with that our style confidence can take a bashing. So, I'm going to share with you a few recurring style mistakes that can be easily avoided - and how to fix them.

1. Relying Too Heavily on Black
Black is easy, feels safe and professional - I get it. But it’s not always your best friend. Many women default to it out of habit, not because it makes them look or feel amazing. With my colour consultant hat on, I have to remind you black is only in the winter palette so looks best on those with high contrast features. But I never tell my clients not to wear a colour - if you love it, wear it. But it's important to be aware that on some people it can be draining and highlight areas on your face you might not be grateful for.
The fix: Discover and consider the colours that truly flatter your skin tone - they can instantly brighten your face, make you look fresher and inject life into your wardrobe. A soft navy, deep plum or rich camel might do more for you than black ever did. These dark tones still look professional but may work better - with you, rather than against you.
2. Dressing for a Past Version of Yourself
It’s easy to hold onto clothes that “used to work” or shop for the style that you used to lean towards 5 or 10 years ago. But this disconnect can leave you feeling frustrated and stuck. Dressing out of habit rather than enjoyment and pleasure can be jarring - one of those things that when you look in the mirror leaves you feeling slightly "off".
The fix: Dress for the shape, person and lifestyle you have now. For example, there may have been a time when you spent your days at kids' cafes and playgrounds, but these activities no longer make up so much of your day to day life. Embrace where you are now with a wardrobe which reflects this. Flattering cuts, quality fabrics and silhouettes that suit your personality and lifestyle. When you dress for your present, you show up with more confidence and authenticity.
3. Confusing Professional with Boring
Somewhere along the way, many women begin to equate looking professional with being plain. But neutral basics and shapeless blazers don’t have to be your uniform.
The fix: Add polish and personality with structured tailoring, interesting textures, your wow colours and thoughtfully chosen accessories. A bold earring, a pop of colour or a standout shoe can maintain professionalism and express your individuality. Find inspiration on Pinterest - I often suggest to clients to create a workwear mood board to give some ideas to work towards.

4. Neglecting Fit
Even the most beautiful outfit won’t shine if the fit is off. A classic style mistake I'm afraid. Wearing clothes that are too tight or too baggy can distort your silhouette and drain your confidence. We've all been there - the skirt that rides up, the trousers that are uncomfortable, and don't start me on shoes...!
The fix: First up, please ignore sizing labels. We all know they're completely inconsistent across shops, manufacturers and brands. For those of us of a certain age, I understand it's a difficult cycle to break. But, try to focus instead on the fit and how it feels and moves on you. No-one sees the label - cut it out afterwards if it makes you feel better.
My next suggestion is tailoring. Tailoring is your secret weapon. Invest in minor adjustments - hems, waistlines, darts - that elevate your everyday pieces. But, be realistic with yourself. If you're unlikely to get it tailored (and your haberdashery skills are lacking!), don't buy it. It'll never feel quite right and I want you to spend your money well.

5. Underestimating the Power of Accessories
Many women underuse accessories, thinking they’re an “extra” rather than an essential. But the right accessories can take an outfit from forgettable to fabulous in seconds. How often have you seen those images on social media with a t-shirt and jeans - only to see it easily elevated with a belt/jewellery/handbag that just works for that person? Simple little touches to elevate the look and instantly look more put together.
The fix: Curate a collection of statement accessories that elevate your basics. Think of them as your personal style signature - something that feels uniquely “you,” whether it’s a silk scarf, a chunky bracelet or a go-to handbag. This won't happen overnight, but is something you work towards - maybe keep a list on your phone so that when a loved one asked for gift inspiration you know exactly what to point them to?
Ready to Ditch These Style Mistakes for Good?
If any of these sound familiar, don’t worry - you’re not doing anything “wrong.” You simply need a little helping hand to reconnect with your style and build a wardrobe that works for you, not against you. Sometimes it's just a case of setting aside some time to work on some of these points, but I know that in itself can be easier said than done.
But that's exactly why I created my Style Confidence Programme - I wanted to create a space and programme which allowed you to invest and prioritise yourself. It's a step-by-step journey designed to help you:
Discover what suits your shape, colouring, and lifestyle
Rebuild your wardrobe with intention and ease
Get dressed every day feeling confident, stylish, and 100% yourself
Learn what works for you, what makes you feel great and allows you to be the best version of you (yes, I can hear how cringey that sounds, but who doesn't want that?!)
