5 Subtle Signs You’ve Outgrown Your Current Style (& 3 Ways Out)

Have you ever opened your wardrobe, pulled out an outfit you’ve worn lots of times, looked in the mirror and thought

This just isn’t me anymore

It’s a strange feeling, one that can sneak up on you. The clothes still fit, they’re in perfectly good condition. But when you put them on, you feel disconnected - like you’re wearing an outfit from a past version of yourself. They just don't feel like "you" anymore.

I've spoken before about major life shifts - career advancements, stepping into a new decade, motherhood or relationship changes. They happen to us all and I know they're often a trigger for my clients which makes them put their hand up and ask for help. Following such changes our wardrobes often lag behind. We end up clinging to safe, comfortable choices simply because we haven’t been able to take the time to rediscover what makes us feel like us. Other things tend to take priority and so we go with the "that'll do" approach.

I want to share with you 5 subtle signs that you've outgrown your style and it no longer reflects who you are today - and how to start bridging the gap with some DIY things for you to try.

You Default to "Safe" Outfits Out of Habit, Rather Than Joy

If your morning routine consists of grabbing the exact same combination because it’s "easy and it'll do", you might be dressing on autopilot. And don't get me wrong, we all do that sometimes. But if it's becoming a habit, then we might want to examine what's happening. Whatever your style, I want you to dress with intention. For example, there’s a big difference between a minimalist, Scandinavian vibe and wearing something just because it doesn't attract attention.

Your style should bring a spark of excitement and feel deliberate.

Your Wardrobe Belongs to a Past Chapter

Take a quick mental audit of your wardrobe:

  • Are you holding onto formal workwear when you now work mainly from home or no longer need that type of clothing?

  • Do you have lots of "wedding guest" outfits even though you don't tend to go many weddings these days?

  • Are you still dressing for a younger you when your 30s, 40s & beyond bring a completely different kind of vibe?

  • Are you keeping "someday" clothes that don't fit your current body or lifestyle?

No judgement, we've all been there. But, if your clothes tell the story of who you were three years ago, it’s probably time for an update.

You Feel Invisible

We know first impressions are made within seconds of meeting someone. How often have you made a judgement about someone on first sight? Your clothes and outfit communicate before you even say a word. If you find yourself in work meetings, social events or everyday life feeling like how you're presenting yourself doesn't match your inner confidence, strength, warmth and personality I would suggest your wardrobe may be out of alignment with you.

Shopping Leaves You Overwhelmed and Disappointed

I hear this a lot and I totally get it. Shopping can be stressful and overwhelming. It's really gutting when you've freed up some time for yourself, to treat yourself and add to your wardrobe - to then come away empty handed and drained. When you don't have a clear grasp on your current style, shopping becomes a game of guesswork. You buy pieces that look great on a mannequin or an Instagram influencer (I've been there), only to get home and realise they don't work with anything else you own. Or, another one I see is people who have lots of the same thing - one thing worked, so you keep repeating the recipe. The result? A wardrobe with clothes with tags still on, less money in your bank account and still feeling like you've nothing to wear.

You Rely on Black or Oversized Pieces to "Hide"

We’ve all been conditioned to treat black or loose silhouettes as the ultimate security blankets. While a tailored black blazer or an oversized sweater can be iconic, using them to camouflage yourself blocks you from experiencing how incredible the right cut and palette can make you look and feel. Similar to what I said about "safe" outfits, I want you to dress with intention. So if oversized pieces fits with your Style DNA then own it. But if you're using these items to hide, I promise it doesn't have to be that way.

So let's give you a few things to try at home to address some of these issues. Don't worry, these are pretty straightforward...

Try the "Reverse Hanger" Challenge

Turn all the clothes hangers in your closet backward so the hooks face toward you (i.e. the wrong way round). Every time you wear an item and put it back, hang it the "normal" way. Set a reminder to check your wardrobe in 2 months time and have an honest chat with yourself about what you've not reached for.

This is something I often suggest to clients (it's like a DIY wardrobe edit) and a great way of challenging yourself to wear more of your wardrobe. You’ll get an honest reality check on which pieces you actually wear vs. the clutter taking up prime real estate.

Create 3 Intentional Outfits (& Take Photos!)

I admit this one takes a little time if done all at once, but you can take it day by day. Spend a little time putting an outfit together that you feel great in. Now, this doesn't need to be anything extraordinary. For instance, it could be as simple as your favourite jeans and a t-shirt in a colour you love. But to elevate it, I'd be suggesting to maybe add a couple of earrings, a fun belt and a spritz of your favourite perfume. Take a little time to add some little touches which will allow you to feel more like you and give you a spring in your step.

Once you have 3 of these, save them on your phone in a folder so you can refer to them. As you grow in confidence, you can slowly add to this folder with little tweaks to these outfits - try changing one element up to create a totally different outfit.

Three Word Method

Yes, I'm still banging on about the 3 style words. But that's because it works! Here's, a piece I previously wrote on this topic with plenty of word inspiration.

With these 3 outfits you've now created, have a think about what is it that makes these outfits work for you. Is there refinement in a classic, put-together sort of way? Or perhaps you prefer something a bit more playful/edgy/earthy?

Having clarity on your 3 style words will allow you to dress with intention and slowly start to work on outfits which feel like you, now. Don't worry if you find it difficult to think of 3 words (or equally if you need to go to 4). Whatever works for you - there are no rules - but referring to your words every time you get dressed or create an outfit will allow you to have a wardrobe of outfits which fit your life.
