Key Fashion Trends for Spring/Summer 2025

Lou Lawton

Whenever I write a newsletter on latest trends, I think I always start off in the same manner - reminding you (and myself) we don't need to follow trends at all. We know this.

However, we're here because we enjoy clothes and are aware of how they can make us feel. Personally, even though there are many trends I don't get involved with I still enjoy being aware of key trends. Seeing what fashions are coming back around again as I'm that age now (whilst researching this piece, skirts over trousers made an appearance - eeek!!). So without further ado, let's delve into the key fashion trends for Spring/Summer 2025 (all images have clickable links). Brace, brace.

  1. Tulle

Yes the Carrie Bradshaw-synonymous material is making it's presence this season. It's a blend of femininity and structure, playfulness and statement. Think of pairing a tulle skirt with a chunky knit or a sweatshirt to play down the formality.

  1. Plaid

Grungy vibes or country chic - take your pick, but plaid was very evident on the catwalks and is very much a fashion trend for Spring/Summer 2025.

  2. Athleisure

Thankfully this one isn't going anywhere. Comfort and stylish can be as one and we're delighted. As with the tulle skirt, consider contrasting these items rather than wearing all as one - i.e. a denim or leather jacket with track bottoms, or a sporty parka jacket with a flowly, pleated skirt. The juxtaposition works!

    4. Tank Tops

Did they ever go off trend anyway? Who knows - but they were very much visible on the catwalks so we're all good. Although the weather to wear tank tops and jeans seems a long way off at the moment.... There are a multitude of options for necklines, material, sleeve cut so you can afford to be fussy to get one(s) that is right for you.

  1. Utility wear

Cargo pants made a reappearance a few years ago and they're not going anywhere just yet. This utilitarian look can be stylish as well as practical (all the pockets please).

In Anna Cascarina's book "The Forever Wardrobe" she suggests the 80/20 approach when considering your wardrobe. The theory being that 80% of your wardrobe are your key staples, the timeless pieces which will work year on year for you and your style. The remaining 20% can be those trend-led pieces that we want to have fun with and incorporate into our outfits. I think this seems like a sensible approach, one which helps us to align with our style and be mindful of our purses.

In considering this theory and the trends for Spring/Summer 2025, shop your wardrobe and see what your already own. Maybe you don't own a tulle skirt but you certainly have a feminine, flowy skirt which could fit the bill. Set aside half an hour some day to play around with it, pairing it with a "scruffy" sweatshirt or oversized knit and trainers to give it a new lease of life.

When working with clients during a wardrobe edit I always encourage them to spend time and thought on identifying their own unique style. Having clarity on how you present yourself, what brings you joy and therefore allows you to stand with your head held high, feeling confident is key to success in understanding your style.

As Yves Saint Laurent said "Fashions fade, style is eternal".
