Tips for Shopping the Autumn/Winter '23 Trends

lougibson21

Finally the shops have the Autumn/Winter '23 stock in and I think most of us are ready for it! We're finally accepting of the cooler weather and now we need to dress for it.

My role as a personal stylist encompasses various things for you - helping you to hone in on and feel comfortable in your personal style, guiding you to dress for your body shape and show you how to feel great in wearing your best, "wow" colours - to name a few. Another important element to my job is that I don't want you to waste your money. I want you to make good value, solid purchases for your wardrobe. I want you to buy things which will serve you well and that you'll wear lots. So here are a few tips if and when you're shopping the Autumn/Winter '23 trends in the coming months.

1. If you're not likely to return it, don't buy online

Yes I know buying online is so convenient. And it's sometimes nicer trying the clothes on in the comfort of our own home. But what if the jeans just aren't the right fit? How are you at returning said jeans? Can you be bothered?

Some companies charge for the returns postage. Or there can be a minimum spend to get free delivery - which of course is how they get you to spend more in the first place. And there's just the hassle of getting to the post office. If you're disciplined with returns, then carry on - but if you've a few items in your wardrobe with the tags still on maybe have a think that online shopping might not be for you.

2. Can you think of 3 ways you'll wear this new item?

You may have heard before of the "Rule of 3". Any new purchase you make should seamlessly join your wardrobe and add to your existing outfits.

For example, if you're buying a new sweatshirt, stop and think. Can you think of 3 different ways you could wear this? For instance, with a pair of jeans (easy option!), with a pleated midi skirt and trainers and with a mini leather skirt and black tights?

It's slightly counterintuitive to buy something new, only to have to buy something else to make it "work".

3. Cost per wear

This final point is about making solid purchases which will give you great value.

There's been plenty in the media about the perils of fast fashion and how we need to be shopping smarter and more conscientiously. How would you feel about spending £120 on a good quality pair of jeans which fit you perfectly, feel great quality and are exactly the colour you're after? Feels a bit spendy? How about the same £120 for a dress for a friend's wedding?

If you wore the dress twice, the cost per wear is £60. Whereas the jeans could be £2 if you thought you might wear the jeans 60 times. So yes, the initial expense of the jeans might seem high but in fact they are giving you much better value for your wardrobe and will provide you with a great investment.

As I started to write this blog I realised I had more points than I wanted to put in 1 email. So, I've just given you 3 tips here - look out for a follow up to this in a couple of weeks. Are you going to be shopping in the coming weeks? Have you got your eye on anything? I'd love to hear so reply to this email to let me know. I'm watching a few things on Vinted at the moment....
